In Defense of my President Thornberry letter
| Mac Thornberry,
It is now 3:00 AM, the morning after you voted to impeach my president. I can't sleep, because the thought of you voting to remove the president has left me in despair. When I voted for you, I never thought the day would come that you would vote to impeach a popularly elected president. I think you have done more to attack the rule of law than anything the President has done. To think you would vote to impeach on a strictly party line in a lame duck congress and with no factual evidence and against the will of the people is more than I can imagine. When I voted for you I thought that you would uphold the constitution of the United States. Can't you see that the action you have taken is against the very foundation of our government? I guess you have never had to go to war and to fight for the freedoms this country once stood for, because you apparently don't feel any need to fight for those same freedoms now. To think that an arm of our government would go after any individual just leaves me in a cold sweat. Ken Star did just that, and now you have jumped on the bandwagon in an attempt to validate an out of control "independent counsel." What have you done? Since you no longer think that elections are important, I can only tell you that I, for one, will not forget this subversion of our government. I have voted for you in the past, but I will never vote again for someone who does not value the freedoms of this country, fought for by so many over the years. Your actions will only be viewed through time as the actions of a politically motivated attempt to rid the government of someone you don't like. How petty can the Republicans be? In my opinion, you have shown a lack of proper judgement and a lack of care for the very Republic that elected you. And I for one intend to remind every voter of your actions, once it comes time to vote for you again. It is strange to me that you expect your own election to be upheld, yet you would not give my President the same favors. You may be my representative in congress, but I don't feel that I am now represented. I feel like I have been raped and that you and the other Republicans have voted only for your own interests. Were my sacrifices for the basic freedoms of this country in vain? In the newspaper article yesterday, you made a number of statements that fit you as well as the president. Your actions have embarrassed our nation. Your actions have reduced the rule of law and the freedoms of our constitution. Your actions are attacking the very election process, and for what? The only reason is to side with those who hate the president and seek his removal, even though the people, who, by the way, knew about the President's tendencies, twice elected him, despite his perceived morality problem. You are supposed to be the protector of our freedoms, not the guard of our morality. I don't think there is any difference between the morality of Bill Clinton and you or any other member of congress. In the end, we are all sinners and to have the Republicans act like they have never done wrong is hypocritical, to say the least. As I said in my paper "In Defense of My President," I have never voted for President Clinton, but I have voted for you, as recently as the last election. But now I feel that only President Clinton is focusing on solving the problems of this country, while you have deserted me. You and most of the rest of the supposedly conservative Republicans are only focused on division and things that hurt our country, rather than focusing on the real problems that people of diversity must always face. I see no moral victory in your stand, I see only a wedge that continues to drive the people of America apart. A house divided among itself cannot stand. We need a strong President leading and guiding the ship of state and the actions of our congress have been to try to disconnect the captain from his ship. History will not judge you favorably in this matter I am afraid. What the Republicans don't seem to understand is that you are hurting both your party and the conservative principles that I thought you stood for. The rights of the individual to be free from unnecessary interference by our government are the most basic of human rights. Yet you have voted in a manner that shows no respect for those rights as they relate to the President of the United States. My worry as a citizen is that my government will now spend $50 million dollars and try to find something wrong with me, or you, or any other citizen. The most serious crime in the world, to me, is a crime of government excess against the individuals of that society. Don't you believe the same? Do we want our government attacking its own people? How can a system remain stable that attacks itself? How can you vote to impeach our President when you know that he has been unfairly investigated and tracked to the extent that no human being could hold up to the scrutiny? Why can't we work together as fellow human beings on this planet and realize that the good of one is really the good of all and that we are all on this planet together and must survive or fall together? Diversity is the single most important characteristic in the survivability of a species. What this means to our species is that we should cherish our differences. We should not strive to make everyone the same Republican (or any other) mold. The most important reason that Jesus Christ came to our planet was to tell us to love those who are different than us. He said that even heathens love those of their family who are similar to themselves. The real test of love is always when it has to do with those who are most unlike ourselves. Only then do we see if our love is real. Where is the love of the Republican Party for the President of our United States? They appear only to hate what they cannot understand and that is exactly the place where the love they all profess as Christians is supposed to come into play. I believe Bill Clinton loves this country as much as any Republican, he just comes from a different background and has different experiences. This entire situation hurts me beyond belief and I now wonder if my losses in Viet Nam were all for no reason, because reason has not been present in the workings of our government. I guess it is now too late for you to do anything to help this situation. But I feel so used by you and I feel that you have let down the people of your district and the people of this country. I urge you to encourage your Republican friends in the Senate to vote against the articles of impeachment that you voted for. Just remember, as you have judged, so will you be judged. Your friend (who will probably not vote for you again),
